A long stretch of land, Cap Ferret extends into the Atlantic, partially closing off the Arcachon Bay. Rising 57 meters into the blue sky, the red and white lighthouse stands out above the green of the pine trees. As the guardian of the Arcachon Bay, it warns sailors of nearby dangers, gazing out towards the horizon. At the top of its 258 steps, a stunning 360° view unfolds over the Arcachon Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The Cap Ferret Lighthouse is a landmark of the region and a must-visit destination during your camping holidays in the Arcachon Bay. Thanks to its optical system, you’ll enjoy an unparalleled view of the Île aux Oiseaux, Lège-Cap-Ferret, the Banc d'Arguin, Andernos, and even the Dune du Pilat.

The Origins of Cap Ferret Lighthouse

In the 19th century, numerous sailors and fishermen regularly frequented the entrance to the Arcachon Bay. To reduce the risk of shipwrecks, a decision was made in 1840 to build a lighthouse to guide them. Standing 50 meters tall, it was erected on a sandy mound in Cap Ferret and operated with steam power until its electrification in 1928. At the time, four keepers worked in shifts to ensure the lighthouse operated 24/7. During World War II, the lighthouse played a significant role in this part of French territory. German forces used it to detect potential attacks. However, as Allied forces gained ground following the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944, German soldiers destroyed the lighthouse before retreating. A temporary tower was erected on the site, and the current lighthouse was constructed in 1947. Fully automated, its light now reaches 50 kilometers. It has been open to the public since July 2000.
