A local anthem sings that the Arcachon Basin is one of the most enchanting places in the world, harboring irresistibly charming locales. We must admit, this beautifully captures the essence of this renowned bay in southern France. Between the turquoise lagoon, pine forests, and oyster villages rich with history, a week here is intensely lived. Discover what awaits you during your stay at our campground, Le Domaine de la Forge! During this week in the Arcachon Basin, embrace the itinerary we've crafted for you, which blends nautical excursions, heritage walks, and culinary breaks, and above all, let yourself be enchanted by the breath of the tides!
Day 1: Arcachon & Bird Island
Begin this first day of discoveries with a visit to the town of Arcachon. Located 14 km from Le Domaine de la Forge, it's nicknamed the "town of four seasons." Bike along its waterfront up to Thiers Jetty, where trawlers unload their catch at dawn. Also, take in the magnificent Belle Époque villas in the picturesque Winter Town and step into the Notre-Dame Basilica of Arcachon to admire its Gothic style.
In the afternoon, embark from the port for Bird Island. Various boat trips are offered, giving you the chance to get close to the iconic Tchanquée Cabins, these stilt houses that first appeared in 1883. You'll also explore the oyster parks and pass by the Cap Ferret peninsula. We recommend booking this Arcachon Basin tour for one to two hours, just before sunset to enjoy a unique atmosphere.
Day 2: Dune du Pilat & La Teste-de-Buch
During this week around the Arcachon Basin, dedicate the morning of your second day to the iconic Dune du Pilat, located 12.5 km from Le Domaine de la Forge. At 110 meters tall, it is the tallest dune in Europe. This expanse of sand draws visitors annually, charmed by the view that encompasses the Landes forest, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Arcachon Basin. We recommend visiting early in the morning to enjoy the site's beauty in tranquility, away from the crowds.
At noon, have lunch at one of the renowned restaurants in Teste-de-Buch, the beautiful town where our campground is located. Here, you can enjoy fresh oysters and/or a delicious sole meunière. After this feast, take a stroll by the port to aid digestion. Then, head to Corniche Beach, accessible by the stairs to the right of the eponymous hotel and facing Arguin Bank. Plan a sporty afternoon by the water. Here, at the entrance to the Basin, you can rent a paddleboard or try your hand at surfing.
Day 3: Markets & Discovering Gujan-Mestras
In a week in the Arcachon Basin, it would be a shame not to take the time to wander through the local markets. The one in Teste-de-Buch, in particular, will captivate you with its friendly atmosphere. Let yourself be charmed by the colorful stalls of producers and other exhibitors, unveiling the authentic flavors of the Gironde terroir and unique artisanal works.
Then head to Gujan-Mestras, the oyster capital with seven ports, located 8 km from our campground. There, dive into the world of oyster farming by visiting the Oyster House, where you can uncover all the secrets of cultivating these delicacies that delight connoisseurs.
Continue your adventure by biking along the cycling paths that wind between wooden shacks and refining pools. If you're staying with family in southern France, don't miss the Eratopia amusement park, where both young and old can enjoy themselves in a natural setting. Know that in spring and summer, at nightfall, you can wander through the night market of Gujan-Mestras.
Day 4: Cap Ferret
The Cap Ferret, located 66 km from our campground, is well worth the detour. We recommend dedicating this entire fourth day to fully discover this exceptional place during your week around the Arcachon Basin.
Start your visit by strolling through the picturesque villages of L'Herbe, Piraillan, or Le Canon, where the fishermen's houses and typical atmosphere immerse you in the authentic charm of the surroundings of the Arcachon Basin.
Continue your adventure by climbing the 258 steps of the Cap Ferret Lighthouse, where a 360° panoramic view awaits you, 62 meters above sea level.
Afterward, rent a bike to head to the Tip of Cap Ferret, where the ocean and the Arcachon Basin meet. Take the opportunity to swim at Plage des Jacquets, with its tranquil waters, or surf the waves at L'Horizon Beach. For those seeking other types of outdoor entertainment, the Four Leisure Park in Lège-Cap Ferret, with its treetop adventure trails, outdoor bowling lanes, and climbing walls, guarantees fun sporting activities to try during your trip in New Aquitaine.
Day 5: Teich Reserve & Biganos
After visiting Cap Ferret, Dune du Pilat, the town of Arcachon, Bird Island, and various other must-sees in the region, we recommend the Ornithological Reserve of Teich for this fifth day of your week in the Arcachon Basin.
Just a fifteen-minute drive from our campground (12.2 km), set off to explore its 6 km of trails to spy on, through the observation huts, egrets, herons, and numerous other birds. This wetland, a nesting haven and stopover for migratory birds, offers a unique experience that you'll fully enjoy only if you bring binoculars with you!
For the second part of your day in the Arcachon Basin, head to Biganos. You can reach this town by renting a license-free electric boat directly from the port of Teich, located 12 km from our campground. The port of Biganos is enhanced by its colorful shacks, formerly occupied by oyster farmers. Let yourself be tempted to rent a kayak, glide on the waters of the Leyre, and weave through the reeds of this river.
During this escapade, also visit the Domaine de Certes, where the old salt marshes have been transformed into a nature reserve. This stunning site will be the ideal setting for a picnic!
Day 6: Biscarrosse
As with Cap Ferret and its beaches, we recommend dedicating an entire day to exploring Biscarrosse during this sixth day of your week around the Arcachon Basin.
Indeed, this town is brimming with captivating activities. Start your schedule with a hike or bike ride through the Usagère Forest, planted in the 18th century to stabilize the dunes.
You can also visit the Museum of Traditions to learn more about the history and daily life of the inhabitants of the Landes in the Middle Ages. This site also houses a pedagogical farm, highly appreciated by vacationing families.
In the afternoon, if the weather permits, it will be relaxation or water activities, but either way, you'll enjoy beautiful moments by the water. If you love the maritime vibe, head to Biscarrosse Beach. However, if you prefer lacustrine landscapes, Lake Cazaux and Lake Biscarrosse-Parentis are perfect for wet adventures and memorable experiences.
Note that Biscarrosse is located 29 km from our 4-star campground on the Arcachon Basin.
Day 7: Andernos-les-Bains & Ares
Our campground, nestled between Lège-Cap Ferret and Bird Island, is about thirty kilometers from Andernos-les-Bains and Arès. On the morning of this final day of your week by the Arcachon Basin, stroll along the 222 meters of Andernos-les-Bains pier. If the tide is high, enjoy a refreshing swim on the beach. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Gallo-Roman ruins of this seaside resort.
In the afternoon, head to Arès for a pleasant bike ride along the path surrounding the Prés Salés d'Arès and Lège-Cap Ferret reserve. Then, explore this natural paradise, where the fauna and flora of the marshes thrive. During this escape to Arès, you'll also have the opportunity to see the Tower of this town, a relic of a windmill dating back to 1840, showcasing the rich past of the Gironde. Furthermore, for a fun and convivial family activity, try geocaching and go on a treasure hunt with Tèrra Aventura. Puzzles will guide you through the town and help you uncover its hidden secrets. Finish this ultimate day of your journey in the south of France in style by watching the sun set over Quinconces Beach.
Bird Island and its famous Tchanquée cabins, Cap Ferret, the Dune du Pilat, Biscarrosse, and all the gems of the Gironde are waiting just for you for an unforgettable experience of a week around the Arcachon Basin. Choose the ideal base to explore the wonders of this region by booking your stay at our campground with a swimming pool in Teste-de-Buch, Le Domaine de la Forge.
