The Dune of Pilat, cherished by tourists and nature lovers, is the tallest sand dune in Europe. During your stay at our Arcachon campsite, set out to explore this exceptional natural site, enjoy a unique experience, and admire the breathtaking view of the Arcachon Bay.

Geography and Location

The Dune of Pilat, one of France’s most iconic dunes, is located in the Gironde region and enhances the Aquitaine coastline. Situated 70 km southwest of Bordeaux and bordering the Landes Forest, the dune is distinguished by its vast sandbank. It stretches 500 meters wide, runs 2.7 kilometers in length, and rises to a height of 100 meters. Listed among France’s great natural sites, the dune contains approximately 60 million cubic meters of sand. Its landscapes are legally protected under the French Environmental Code. To the east, the dune is sheltered by the Arcachon Bay, while to the west, it is bordered by the vast Atlantic Ocean. It faces the Banc d’Arguin, Cap Ferret, and a pine forest.

Formation and Geological Features

Based on observations of the rocks composing the Dune of Pilat, its formation began several thousand years ago. Its continuous evolution is the result of sand deposits and the forces of erosion. Indeed, while westerly winds carry sand, easterly winds have sculpted its contours. In addition to the winds, tides have influenced its position along the coast and contributed to sand accumulation. However, the natural movements of the sand have been altered by urbanization and tourism. Today, the Dune of Pilat, a gem of La Teste-de-Buch and the Gironde region, continues its slow migration inland.
