Pyla-sur-Mer: A Bit of History

The seaside resort of Pyla-sur-Mer was founded in 1915 by entrepreneur Daniel Muller, who acquired the land through an exchange with the state, swapping hectares at Lake Cazaux for areas between Moulleau and the Dune of Pilat. To attract residents, he built large villas blending Landes and Neo-Basque styles. These character-filled villas now contribute to Pyla-sur-Mer’s charm and unique personality. The resort was named Pyla-sur-Mer, a modernized spelling of "Pilat," meaning "hill" in Gascon, referencing the dune. Today, Pyla-sur-Mer is a district of La Teste-de-Buch, stretching from the entrance of the Arcachon Basin to the Dune of Pilat. Visitors unanimously praise this stunning area of La Teste-de-Buch.
