The Olympia Theatre plays a key role in Arcachon's cultural life. Standing proudly on Avenue du Général de Gaulle for nearly 150 years, it shapes the rhythm of the town with a variety of events. How about attending a play or a movie at this iconic venue?
The Creation of Olympia: The Story of This Iconic Theatre in Arcachon
The history of Arcachon’s Olympia dates back to the 19th century. This performance hall was the brainchild of the then-mayor, Adalbert-Alexandre, designed to meet the expectations of Arcachon residents. He entrusted Eugène Ormières, an architect and future magistrate of Arcachon, with its construction. The Grand Théâtre (its original name) was officially inaugurated on March 6, 1874. Its elegant façade, adorned with cut stone and Corinthian columns, makes it instantly recognizable. In 1898, the city of Arcachon acquired the building and renamed it the Grand Théâtre Municipal. By 1924, the traditional theatre hall had evolved into a cinema-theatre and later a dance venue, with the addition of a new hall named "Olympia," thus giving rise to its current name, "Théâtre Olympia." From the interwar period to today, passing through the 1960s, the Olympia has continued to host diverse events. Notable highlights in its history include Jacques Brel's first performance, family cinema Tuesdays, and appearances by Mireille Mathieu and Joe Dassin.

Visitors attending events at the Olympia are immersed in a grand hall with an intimate atmosphere and a striking red decor, from the floor to the ceiling, including the seats. A cultural hub for the town, the establishment hosts a variety of events throughout the year.
